We ensure that our teachers are all trained and expert in their field and work together to provide a nurturing and interesting learning environment.

Principal: Carmel Amelia Horsfield

Carmel was trained at the highly respected Carole Oliver School of Ballet in Ballarat. After 16 years of training and performing with the school she began teacher training with Carole Oliver for the Cecchetti Associate qualification. Carmel also completed her Diploma of Education at Ballarat University with a major in Physical Education. After a number of years teaching and training in Melbourne she opened the Carmel Amelia School of Dance in Woodend in 1991.

The Carmel Amelia School of Dance now offers the best training in the region. Student successes and awards have been many with students moving on to further their training at The Australian Ballet School, The Victorian College of the Arts, National Theatre, New Zealand Ballet School and winning State and National Awards.
 Other experience also includes performing in amateur musical theatre productions and Renaissance dance performances. Costume design has also been an interest, with the school now having gained a reputation for stunning costuming. Carmel has continued to further her dance teacher training with  Cecchetti Ballet Australia and believes that self improvement and evaluation should never stop if a teacher is to offer the best.

Madeleine Legge
Contemporary Dance and Classical Ballet

Madeleine began dancing at the age of 7 at the Carmel Amelia School of Dance. She was a student there for 9 years until in 2003 she successfully auditioned for The Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. She spent a year there finishing her school studies and dancing full time and at the end of 2003 was awarded a place at The New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) in Wellington.

After 3 years of full time dance she graduated from NZSD with a Diploma in Contemporary Dance Performance and a position at the well known contemporary dance company Black Grace. She performed with Black Grace from August 2006 until June 2007, including a National Tour of New Zealand in the dance work ‘Amata’.

After declining to renew her contract in June, Madeleine, returning back to Australia to pursue a newfound love of choreography and teaching, joined the teaching staff at The Carmel Amelia School of Dance.

Julie Green
Jazz, Tap and Song and Dance

Worked and toured Australia in various Television Series and Cabaret Productions with artists that included Peter Allen, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr and Elton John.
Her Television credits include Countdown, The Don Lane Show and various Commercials.

Toured extensively throughout South East Asia, North and South America and spent 10 years in Europe as a dancer/choreographer/teacher.
She performed at the Team Unite Event for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and with Opera Victoria in ‘La Traviata’

In the past six years has also adjudicated at Dandenong, Goldields, Warragul, Bendigo, Moe, Goodwill, Baccus Marsh and Heidelberg Eisteddfods.

Kate has been dancing since the age of 5 and began training at the Carmel Amelia School of Dance at the age of 8 studying Classical Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary Dance. Comp She has completed every level of Cecchetti Ballet from Grade 1 through to Advanced 1, and gained extensive performing experience through the various concerts and competition events that she has taken part in.

Kate studied VET Dance and VCE Dance in Secondary College, then on to complete her Certificate III in Fitness at Victoria University. She has also attended classes at the Australian Ballet School, Christine Walsh Dance Centre, The VCA, The Space and attended various dance workshops including The Melbourne Dance Weekender.

Kate is currently teaching Jazz/Funk and Cecchetti Ballet with the Carmel Amelia School of Dance and is working towards furthering her qualifications in the Cecchetti method.

Lauren Crosbie

Jessica Yeend

Miss Jessica Yeend started dancing with the Carmel Amelia School of Dance when she was 3 and has been dancing with the school for over 16 years. Jessica has completed her Cecchetti Ballet exams and studied Tap, Jazz & Comtemporary Dance.

Miss Jess has been a trainee leader for 3 years with Miss Carmel and is now imparting her extensive experience to her own students. Jessica is continuing her training as a teacher in the Cecchetti Syllabus.

Jessica performed extensively in solos, troupes, auditions and concerts over her dancing years.
